Formula 1: schedule, start times and where to watch every race

Following Formula 1 comes with a problem football doesn’t have: hardly any race runs at a sensible hour. European rounds are early Sunday morning, the Asian ones are overnight, and a couple land in the middle of the night. This guide solves both halves of that — what time each session starts in your own zone, and how to watch the full race when you weren’t about to set an alarm for it.

What time does the F1 race start?

A Grand Prix isn’t one event, it’s five: three practice sessions, qualifying and the race, spread from Friday to Sunday. On sprint weekends the format changes — a single practice session, and a short points-scoring race on Saturday.

The calendar below defaults to Mexico Central time. Use the selector to switch it to any of the four US time zones or to the track’s own local time, daylight saving already accounted for. And note something that doesn’t come up in other sports: here the selector changes the day too. First practice in Malaysia, for instance, is Thursday night in Mexico and Friday afternoon at Sepang.

The full replay, whenever you wake up

This is the part people ask about most, and it’s what makes an overnight calendar workable. On Faro TV the full race is recorded about 3 hours after it ends, in the recordings section, and it stays there for the rest of the season. It plays on any device running the app.

In practice: when a Grand Prix runs at 5 in the morning, you don’t have to choose between losing a night’s sleep and finding out the result from your timeline. You watch the whole thing whenever suits you — and if you come back to the season in December, every race is still there.

What gets saved is the race. Practice, qualifying and the sprint are live only.

What channel is Formula 1 on?

Unlike football, F1 broadcast rights run for a full season: whoever carries it carries it all year, so there’s no working out the channel race by race. What does vary is how much of the weekend each one shows.

• United States — Apple TV.
• Mexico — Sky Sports, Izzi and F1 TV Pro carry every session. TUDN shows some races, not the full calendar.
• Spain — DAZN.

The table under the calendar has the detail. Broadcasters marked selected races only appear with a dashed outline on purpose: you can’t assume they’ll have this Sunday’s.

Choosing who you watch it with

A side effect of having all three countries’ feeds in one place: the same race, with the commentary you prefer. The original English broadcast, or the Spanish one from Mexico or from Spain. Anyone who has followed F1 for years tends to have strong opinions about this, and until now it meant paying for services in three different countries.

The Mexico City Grand Prix

It’s the big weekend of the year for Mexican fans and, for once, the clock is on your side: the race is at home, so there’s nothing to stay up for.

It runs on Sunday, November 1 at 2:00 PM Mexico Central time at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. The weekend opens on Friday, October 30 with the first two practice sessions, and qualifying is Saturday, October 31 at 3:00 PM.
